About Us

Proudly presented by Brisbane Powerhouse and brisbanetimes.com.au, the Brisbane Comedy Festival is the largest festival celebrating comedy in Queensland.

Kicking off 2009, the Brisbane Comedy Festival has quickly become an anticipated highlight of Brisbane's cultural program.

Housed in Brisbane Powerhouse, one of Australia's most iconic arts centres, the festival creates a hub for the community to celebrate all things funny. The festival also provides new opportunities to Queensland comedians to perform alongside national and international talent, assisting in their career development.

Brisbane Comedy Festival is curated by Brisbane's very own comedian Josh Thomas.

About Brisbane Powerhouse

Brisbane Powerhouse is a contemporary performing arts venue nestled on the beautiful banks of Brisbane River beside New Farm Park. The former power station has become a distinct Brisbane landmark, both as a stunning industrial creation and as a hub for everything creative, including theatre, music, comedy, film, visual arts, festivals and ideas.

Funded by Brisbane City Council (BCC), Brisbane Powerhouse opened as an arts centre in 2000 after its 30-year reign as a derelict power station. Bold industrial structures laced with European flair, raw textures and preserved graffiti walls combine to create the perfect artistic space and have earned the building a heritage listing.

The refurbishment in early 2007 ensures a holistic arts and dining experience with additions including a new café bar, a reconfigured Turbine Platform to constitute a concert stage, a reconfiguration of the Powerhouse Theatre, an additional functions spaces.

The Brisbane Powerhouse team strives to bring the world's finest arts to Brisbane and take the best of Brisbane arts to Australia and the world.

About Josh Thomas

At the age of just 17 Josh Thomas was the youngest ever winner of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival's RAW Comedy competition in 2005. He also made the finals of So You Think You're Funny, Edinburgh's equivalent to RAW Comedy.

After only a few short years of performing stand up Josh's unique talent has the Australian comedy industry abuzz. His virginal looks and cutting dialect combine to create a voice that is genuinely distinct and exciting. For a performer so young to have such an honest and developed sense of who he is on stage is quite remarkable.

Josh has performed solo seasons at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival as well as the invitation only Smithwicks Cat Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny, Ireland. Following on from this, he has been invited to perform at a comedy festival in Belgium where he'll get to try out his best Flemish jokes.

Expanding his TV dance card, Josh has become a regular favourite on Network Ten's Talkin' About Your Generation and Good News Week. Josh also has appeared on Celebrity Masterchef and Rove.

Josh was the original curator for the Brisbane Powerhouse free comedy program, Livewired that was voted Best Free Activity in Brisbane according to www.ourbrisbane.com in 2008.
